Indeed, the Dodgers will need to rely on Vesia, their top left-hander, and Graterol, a hard-throwing right-hander with a track record of October success, to navigate the New York Yankees’ star-studded lineup.

Will Smith drove in Hernández on a sacrifice fly to right field to give the Dodgers a 1-0 lead. Hernández just beat Soto’s throw to the plate to score. Gavin Lux flied out to center field to end the inning.

Game 3 is Monday at Yankee Stadium.
Hernández and Freeman are the second set of Dodgers to hit back-to-back homers in the World Series, joining Pedro Guerrero and Steve Yeager in Game 5 in 1981. That, of course, came against the Yankees as well. Dating back to 2021, Freeman now has a four-game homer streak in the postseason. Only George Springer (five games from 2017-19) has a longer streak.
• Yamamoto was exactly what the Dodgers needed, delivering the 11th start of at least six innings and one or no hits allowed in World Series history. It was the first of those by a rookie and the second by a Dodger, joining Rich Hill in Game 4 in 2018.
New York staged a comeback attempt in the top of the ninth inning. With Soto on second, Giancarlo Stanton singled to drive him in and cut the deficit to two runs. Jazz Chisholm then singled to right to have runners on first and second with one out. Los Angeles reliever Blake Treinen followed by hitting Anthony Rizzo to load the bases for Anthony Volpe, but Volpe struck out. Alex Vesia replaced Treinen and got Jose Trevino to fly out to centerfield.

Game 5 world series 2024
• Home runs were a theme. Of the 49 runs scored in this Fall Classic, 30 were via homers. That’s 61.2 percent of runs scored via homer, the highest in any World Series, surpassing 57.4% in 2017 (39 of 68 runs).
I’ll be curious to see what sort of information Shohei Ohtani and the Dodgers will reveal about the extent of his shoulder injury. Because, if one may be frank, there are two things here that are worth saying:
The Dodgers’ offensive burden was shared among many — Freeman, Mookie Betts and Teoscar Hernández each drove in two runs, Kiké Hernández and Tommy Edman each scored two — but Treinen’s work out of the bullpen was a singular effort.
At that point, Yankees manager Aaron Boone had no choice but to go to closer Luke Weaver. The season was on the line and he needed his best on the mound. Weaver threw 21 pitches in Game 4 and was pitching for the third straight day for the first time in 2024. Honestly, he did well to limit the damage to two runs. Gavin Lux and Betts brought the two runs home on sac flies.
Treinen was at his usual limit, just over 20 pitches, when he got through the meat of the Yankees lineup in the bottom of the eighth, easing the burden on Walker Buehler, who came out of the pen — two days after starting Game 3 — to get the save in the bottom of the ninth.
